COAS Advocates for Improved Collaboration Between Military, Media to Fortify National Security Policies
Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Army Chief of Staff (COAS), has said that the media has an influence and impact on how public perceptions are created; therefore, their collaboration with the Nigerian Army is important for national security.
The COAS, who was represented by Corps Commander Armour, Maj. Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, stated the importance of accurate reporting and its potential for mitigating false information for the purpose of creating national cohesion when he spoke at the Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Quarterly Media Chat for the First Quarter of 2025 in Gombe State.
“Debates concerning whether the pen is mightier than the sword have long since passed; the outcome is that the pen most certainly wins. Yet, in these multifaceted times of security concerns, partnership between the pen and the sword, the media and military, is crucial for the security of the nation,” Gen. Oluyede said.
According to him, the media should exercise professionalism, fairness, and accuracy in their reporting while also protecting national interest.
He criticised misinformation that could impede national security efforts and pointed out that the Nigerian Army is dedicated to allowing media coverage of their operations as long as operational security is not compromised.
“Sustained efforts towards enhancing internal and external communication to the general populace will be advanced by the Nigerian Army.”
“This media chat is a testament to that commitment,” Gen. Oluyede said.
He said that journalists ought to try and go beyond conflict reporting to include nation-building, peacebuilding, and community development activities.
He claimed the military has had great success in the operations, such as the rescue of abductees, the restoration of economic life, and the strong resolve of the army to fight all forms of insecurity and guarantee the safe return of IDPs to their regions.
