Encroachment: Gombe sports commission wants protection of playing grounds
The newly appointed Chairman, of Gombe State Sports Commission, Dr Olanre Daniel has advocated proactive measures to check indiscriminate encroachment of schools’ playing grounds across the state.
Daniel made the call while taking over the affairs of the commission on Thursday in Gombe.
He said the call was imperative to protect playing grounds in school and encourage the development of sporting events at the grassroots.
“I am appealing to the state government to take measures against the incessant erection of structures on playing grounds in primary and secondary schools in the interest of grassroots sports development,” he said.
According to him, sport is playing a significant role towards encouraging youths to develop their potential and engage in productive activities.
He said the commission would adopt proactive measures to encourage talents hunt at the grassroots, adding that the state was blessed with talents playing within and outside the country.
The commission, he said, would promote private sector partnership to restore the lost sports glory in the state
Daniel urged corporate organisations, financial institutions and individuals to invest in sports, adding that it was the major unifying factor and money-making venture.
“I appeal to organisations and individuals to invest in sport for the betterment of the people, especially the youth,” he said.
While commending the state government for its support to the Commission, Daniel called for closer collaboration with media to fast track sustainable sports development in the state.
