Declaring the Climate Pledge Conference open at the weekend (Friday) in Makurdi, Benue state, DCEDI’s Executive Director, Suunen Atsuwe disclosed: “Despite being the least contributor to global warming, the impacts suffered and vulnerability are unfairly of the climate changes from African countries.”
He noted that the continent suffers consequences that are unjustly disproportionate to its level of contribution to global warming.
According to him, Africa’s contribution to greenhouse gases is currently very low.
“DevTrain is making a strong commitment to contribute to the fight against climate change and its consequences for the most vulnerable,” he said.
He added that DevTrain with support from Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Nigeria and Coalition for Socio-Ecological Transformation (CoSET) implemented the Climate Pledge Project in line with the SDG 13.
“It seeks to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts,” he said, by advocating to influential individuals and institutions with established platforms and members across different sectors.
According to him, DevTrain will impact on humans and the environment, including organically incorporating climate-smart strategies and policies into their organizations’ activities and projects.
The Climate Pledge Conference tagged: “Climate pledge launch: A simple, organic way to improve conservations on climate change in Africa,” drew 60 participants to discuss practical ways to improve conservation on climate change in Africa.
“We are in a climate crisis,” he warned.
He added that there is the need to join hands and increase awareness of measures to mitigate and adapt to the realities of climate change.
The Climate Pledge Project Officer, Terkimbi Songo, also said: “This is an advocacy project where stakeholders with power and influence in their communities, are encouraged to be committed on climate action.
He said that climate change will continue to plunge more people into poverty globally, if nothing is urgently done about it.
He attributed the negative impacts of climate change to migration, food insecurity and violence among various communities.
He, therefore, urged individuals and organisations with existing large platforms to pledge to simple doable actions to incorporate climate change in their daily activities.
