Nigerian Teacher Kayode Adewale Among Global Top 50, Wins $1M Education Prize

Fifty teachers win $1 million. GTP in Nigeria, U.S. Fifty teachers won the Global Teachers Prize (GTP) for an extraordinary contributions to transforming people’s lives and communities through education.
According to the U.. Varkey Foundation, yesterday in Maiduguri, Kayode Adewale, a mathematics teacher in Nigeria, has groundbreaking work in education that earned him local and international recognition.
The Varkey GTP awards (estimated at about N1.6 billion) are also supported by UNESCO in honouring the top 50 teachers globally.
Adewale had been a mathematics teacher at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School, Ogun State, and was a graduate of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun.
“The higher institution is a premier university for teachers’ training in Nigeria and was ranked among the top 10 globally,” said the Foundation.
He rose to prominence with innovative teaching methods and commitment to educational transformation in Nigerian schools. His impact in education has been celebrated with accolades in national awards, including the reception in Maryland, U.S., during his Fulbright fellowship.
Among Adewale’s transformation 1090 project, he trained over 30,000 teachers, including the introduction of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The Foundation stated, “The Transformation 5130 project, in partnership with educators from six countries, has also enriched professional development for no less than 5,000 teachers. “This has also amplified the ripple effects of his Fulbright experience in the education sector. Other ambitious projects of Adewale comprise Ogun527GoToSpace, the Limitless Space Institute, U.S., and the Space Exploration Clubs in 517 secondary schools for students’ inspirations to dream beyond the stars. This enabled him to win the GTP awards in the U.S.
