The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kebbi State Council has distributed food items and cash gifts to the families of its late members who died in active service, as part of its annual Ramadan welfare initiative.
Speaking at the event, the State Council Chairman, Comrade Bello Sarki Abubakar, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to supporting the widows and children of its fallen colleagues. He noted that the initiative was first introduced by a former chairman of the council, Alhaji Aliyu Jajirma, and has since become a cherished tradition.
“Successive administrations of the union have ensured that this event holds every Ramadan to ease the economic hardship faced by the families of our departed colleagues,” Comrade Sarki Abubakar stated.
He announced that each family of the 21 deceased members would receive a 25kg bag of rice and ₦10,000, while six chapels under the NUJ in the state were given ₦80,000 and two bags of rice each as part of the Ramadan and Sallah package.
While expressing appreciation for the Kebbi State Government’s support, the NUJ Chairman commended Governor Nasiru Idris for his administration’s developmental strides over the past two years.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, praised the union for its welfare efforts. He assured journalists in the state that the government remains committed to their well-being and promised to make the next edition of the event even more impactful.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Hajiya Hadiza Abdullahi, a widow of a deceased journalist, expressed gratitude to the NUJ for remembering their families.
“This kind gesture reassures us that our late husbands’ sacrifices have not been forgotten,” she said.
The NUJ Kebbi State Council’s annual Ramadan initiative continues to serve as a beacon of hope for the families of fallen journalists, reinforcing the spirit of solidarity and care within the media community.
