Parents Urge Zamfara Governor to Rescue Stranded Students in Cyprus
Parents of Zamfara students stranded in Cyprus have appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal for swift intervention to address the plight of their children.
The Chairman of the parents’ association, Ibrahim Tudu, made the call during a press briefing in Gusau on Wednesday, highlighting the dire conditions faced by 88 students studying at Cyprus International University, Nicosia.
Tudu explained that the students, who were awarded scholarships under the previous administration based on academic merit, are now enduring severe hardship due to the non-payment of tuition, accommodation fees, and allowances by the Zamfara State Government.
“Our children, who are bona fide Zamfara indigenes, are currently suffering from a lack of food, accommodation, and basic upkeep. They are also dealing with safety concerns, academic disruptions, and mental health challenges,” Tudu said.
He disclosed that the students had been evicted from their school accommodations and now reside in mosques and rented houses, where they face harassment over unpaid rent.
“The situation is especially concerning for the female students, who are dealing with multiple challenges. Additionally, their international passports and Cyprus resident permits have expired, putting them at risk of detention, imprisonment, or deportation,” he added.
Tudu stressed the urgency of the situation, urging the state government to act promptly to alleviate the students’ suffering.
“We appeal to Governor Lawal to save the lives of these students without further delay. Their education and well-being are at stake,” he pleaded.
The parents called on the state government to honor its commitment to the students and ensure their safe return or continued education in Cyprus.
