The Portrait of Lake Child Initiative (PLCI), in collaboration with the Grow Strong Foundation, has trained 40 women on gender-based violence (GBV) in Yobe State.
According to the women’s foundations, the training is to equip them with various skills to support survivors of GBV in five local government areas of Fune, Tarmuwa, Potiskum, Gujba, and Damaturu, the state capital.
Declaring the training workshop open yesterday (Monday) in Damaturu, the Executive Director of PLCI, Zarah Yusuf Ahmad, stated, “The training of women is part of our sustainability plan and exit strategy for the NHF protection project titled “Promoting Access to Multi-Sectoral Protection Services for Women and Girls in the State.”
She further disclosed that the training sessions focused on the critical aspects of GBV responses. She stated that the responses included survivor-centred case management, referral mechanisms, and access to justice and equity in the affected communities.
She added that the trained women will be provided with practical tools to effectively assist GBV survivors by advocating for justice in their respective communities.
Zarah continued, “Our goal was to promote the local ownership of GBV prevention efforts,” noting that this will ensure a sustainable protection process without direct involvement of PLCI.
The Executive Director noted that PLCI aligns with global efforts in fighting GBV with the various intervention services.
She, therefore, assured the women that the vulnerable populations will also be empowered by promoting gender equality, stating, “Women-led organisations will be equipped with the required knowledge and resources,” she said, assuring that PLCI fosters a strong and responsive community-based system in addressing GBV in the state.
