Power Tussle: Court Orders Emir Sanusi’s Ouster from Kano Palace
In a dramatic turn of events, the Federal High Court has mandated the removal of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace.
The legal battle, which has captivated Kano State over the past week, centers on the rightful occupant of the Emir of Kano title between the former Central Bank Governor Muhammadu Sanusi II and the current Emir Dr. Aminu Ado Bayero.
On Tuesday, Justice S. A. Amobeda issued an ex-parte order stating the decision was made to ensure justice and maintain peace in the region.
The court order, referenced in suit no. FHC/KN/CS/190/2024, instructed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Kano State Police Commissioner, Hussain Gumel, to uphold all rights and privileges of Dr. Aminu Ado Bayero as the legitimate Emir.
The federal high court directive counters a prior Kano State High Court order by Justice Amina Aliyu, which prevented the police, DSS, and military from evicting Emir Lamido Sanusi from his palace.
Justice Amobeda’s ruling also directed the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, and all security agencies in Kano to comply strictly with the federal court’s order.
Acting on a motion ex-parte by M.L. Yusufari SAN and other legal representatives for Emir Ado Bayero, the Federal High Court further prohibited the security agencies from any acts of intimidation, harassment, or arrest of Emir Ado Bayero until the final hearing.
The court also forbade the police from blocking Emir Aminu Ado Bayero’s access to his official residence and palace, ensuring he retains all his rights and privileges.
The legal dispute is set to continue, with the next hearing scheduled for June 4th. This unfolding saga highlights the intense power struggle and legal complexities surrounding the traditional leadership in Kano State.
