West Africa Bloc ECOWAS Maintains Ties with Withdrawn Member States
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that it will continue to recognize the national passports and identity cards of citizens from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, despite their official withdrawal from the bloc today, January 29, 2025.
In a press statement, ECOWAS urged all relevant authorities within and outside its member states to maintain existing ties with the three countries. This includes continuing to treat goods and services from these nations in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.
Furthermore, citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will still be allowed to enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS member states, in line with existing protocols.
ECOWAS has also pledged to provide full support and cooperation to its officials from the three withdrawn member states, ensuring a seamless transition period. These arrangements will remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities of future engagement with the three countries.
The commission has established a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries, aiming to avoid confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of people in the region.
This development comes after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their decision to leave ECOWAS, citing concerns over the bloc’s influence and its handling of regional security issues.
