YSU VC Urges Responsible Social Media Use at SUG Inauguration
The Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Prof. Mala Mohammed Daura, has called on students to exercise responsibility and caution in their social media activities. He made the statement during the inauguration of the new Executive Council of the Student Union Government (SUG) on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Geidam Hall.
Represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, Prof. Daura expressed concern over unguarded utterances made by some students regarding university activities on social media platforms. He advised students to seek clarification through appropriate institutional channels to avoid spreading misinformation or engaging in hate speech.
“The misuse of social media can have serious implications. Always confirm information through proper channels before sharing, to prevent harm to yourself and others,” Prof. Isa emphasized.
Dr. Idi Mohammed, Acting Director of ICT, also addressed the gathering, urging students to follow proper procedures when applying for the NELFUND student loan. He noted that errors in applications have caused delays for many students.
Additionally, Prof. Adam Zarma, Head of the Geology Department, and Dr. Hadiza Mali Bukar from the Department of Public Administration, advised students to prioritize their academic pursuits over student unionism.
The newly inaugurated SUG President, Comr. Yunusa Abdullahi Barde, pledged to focus on students’ welfare, academic support, leadership development, and promoting inclusion and equality. He called on students to support his administration in delivering on its promises.
