13 Dead in Plateau Mining Site Collapse, Authorities Confirm
Thirteen people have lost their lives following the collapse of a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, authorities confirmed on Monday.
Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, which occurred on Saturday at a mining location on the border between Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs. Seven of the deceased were identified as residents of Bassa.
“This is an unfortunate incident; these young people were simply seeking a means of livelihood,” Riti said, noting the harsh economic realities driving many to engage in mining work. “I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
According to the reports, most of the victims were young adults aged between 18 and 30. The collapse underscores the risks many miners face daily as they work in hazardous conditions to support themselves amid economic hardship.
