2036 World Cup: Bamigboye Urges Super Eagles to Elevate Their Game for Qualification
Godwin Bamigboye, chairman of the FCT Football Coaches Association, emphasised the need for the Super Eagles to sharpen their focus and improve their performance to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His remarks came after the team’s disappointing performances against South Africa and Benin Republic in the Group C World Cup qualifiers.
Bamigboye pointed out the urgency of the situation, noting that the Super Eagles had only managed to gather three points from four games in a group they were expected to dominate with ease.
He stressed that the team must win their remaining six matches to ensure their qualification for the prestigious tournament.
“Finidi George is on a hot seat,” Bamigboye remarked. “The team has shown a lack of urgency and commitment in their recent games. They can’t continue with this mindset if they hope to make it to the World Cup.
The players must realise that the tournament offers significant career and financial benefits. It’s their responsibility to stay focused and secure those wins.”
Currently, Nigeria is languishing in fifth place in a group that includes South Africa, the Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho. With the 2026 World Cup expanding to 48 teams, the stakes are higher.
The top team from each of the nine African qualifying groups will earn an automatic spot in the tournament. Additionally, the four best runners-up will enter the playoffs to vie for a chance to participate in the intercontinental playoffs.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in June, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As the countdown to the tournament continues, the Super Eagles must rise to the occasion, overcome their current challenges, and secure their place on the world stage.
