Agatu Community Attack: Hon Ejeh Talks Tough, Promises Lasting Solution
By Lawrence Bilal Audu
Following the devastating attack on Egwuma community in Ogwule Ogbaulu Ward which left a trail of destruction, with several houses burnt and millions of naira worth of livestock and properties looted by suspected Fulani herdsmen and cattle rustlers, the Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council, Hon. Melvin James Ejeh, has strongly condemned the attack vowing serious serious consequences for perpetrators.
In a statement released today, October 10, 2024, Ejeh expressed sympathy for the people of Egwuma and surrounding areas, urging calm as his administration works tirelessly to find a lasting solution to the long-standing crisis. This attack is reminiscent of previous clashes between farmers and herders in the region, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property.
Ejeh who doubles as Vice-Chairman of Benue ALGON, assured that immediate action has been taken to deploy security personnel to restore peace in the area. Additionally, his administration is working on a long-term solution to prevent future attacks.
“We are committed to rebuilding communities and ensuring the safe return of every Agatu citizen to their ancestral home,” Ejeh stated. “No one should be forced to live as a displaced person in their own homeland.”
The Chairman called for unity and calm, emphasizing the need to confront this “common monster” together.
The Agatu community has faced similar attacks in the past, including the 2016 massacre that left hundreds dead and thousands displaced. The ECOWAS Court of Justice has since ordered the Nigerian government to investigate the attack and provide adequate security measures.
