Alau Dam Overflow Triggers Mass Displacement in Maiduguri
Thousands of residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, and parts of Jere Local Government Area have been left stranded and displaced following the collapse of a protective dyke and the overflow of Alau Dam, located about 10 kilometers from the city.
Despite earlier reassurances from the Borno State Government, led by the Secretary to the Government, Bukar Tijjani, that there was no imminent danger, the floodwaters began to inundate the city on Monday evening.
Key areas affected by the flooding include Shehu’s Palace, Monday Market, the Post Office, Gwange, Moromoro Customs Bridge, Zoo, and Bulabullin, leaving a trail of devastation across these communities.
In neighboring Yobe State, the flood situation has worsened, with only five local government areas—Nangere, Potiskum, Fika, Fune, and Gujba—remaining accessible to Damaturu, the state capital.
Twelve other local government areas, including Nguru, Jakusco, Gashua, and Gaidam, have been completely cut off due to the destruction of bridges, roads, houses, and properties valued in the billions of naira.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Borno State, ASP Kenneth Daso, issued a statement on Tuesday morning, urging citizens to avoid flood-prone routes and remain in safer areas.
“Police and other relevant government agencies are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of lives and property,” he assured.
As both states battle the impacts of the ongoing flood disaster, authorities are racing against time to restore normalcy and prevent further damage.
