Alhassan Yahya Emerges NUJ President, Pledges Fairness, Equity
Former Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Alhassan Yahya, has been elected as the union’s new National President.
Yahya secured 436 votes to defeat two opponents during the Eighth Triennial Delegates’ Conference held in Owerri from Wednesday to Thursday.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mike Ikeogwu, declared Yahya the winner early Thursday. His closest rival, Bamidele Atunbi, garnered 97 votes, while Garba Mohammed received 39 votes.
“By the powers vested in me as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, I hereby declare that Alhassan Yahya, having polled the highest number of votes, is returned as President of the NUJ for the next three years,” Ikeogwu announced.
Yahya, a media professional with Gombe Media Corporation, is the first NUJ president from the North-East. In his acceptance speech, he promised to serve with humility and integrity, pledging to uphold the NUJ Constitution with fairness, equity, and justice.
He succeeds Chief Chris Isuguzo of the South-East, who completed two terms spanning six years.
Meanwhile, Abimbola Oyetunde, General Manager of Radio Nigeria Bronze FM in Edo, was elected unopposed as Deputy National President, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Oyetunde previously served as a member of the NUJ Board of Trustees.
Other officers returned unopposed include Victor Ndukwe as National Treasurer, Ronke Samo as Vice President of B-Zone (Southwest), and Eze Adiukwu as Zonal Secretary for the South-East.
The conference marked another milestone for the NUJ as it continues its mission to strengthen journalism across Nigeria.
