The Nigerian Army (NA) has vehemently denied allegations of mass killing of innocent civilians in the South East region, labeling the claims as “despicably false” and “mischievous.” The allegations, made by Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) terrorist group, claimed that troops were killing and dumping bodies in a river.
The NA conducted a comprehensive investigation and found that the troops in the video footage were actually personnel of the Nigerian Navy, engaged in a routine weapon test firing exercise in the Southwest region, not the South East. The exercise was conducted with precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
Fraud Claims: group describes Peoples Gazette report against Dikwa as false, malicious
The NA refuted claims of corpses being discovered in the area and urged the public to disregard the “unfounded claims and irredeemable falsehood” propagated by Ekpa and his associates, aimed at inciting unrest. The NA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and order, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and encouraged the public to seek verified information.
The statement, signed by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, commended law-abiding citizens who promote peace and harmony, and reiterated the NA’s dedication to protecting lives and livelihoods, upholding peace and order, and remaining a pillar of stability and security for the nation.
