In a brazen act of violence, suspected Boko Haram terrorists kidnapped four passengers in an audacious attack along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road near Auno village, about 25 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, on Tuesday evening.
Eyewitnesses from Auno reported that the terrorists blocked the road and forcefully abducted the passengers travelling towards Maiduguri.
“The exact number of abducted passengers is, however, unknown, as most of the passengers scampered for safety first,” said Bana Modu, a local resident.
He revealed that the assailants operated for over an hour between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari villages before any police presence was observed, and by then, the kidnappers had vanished without a trace.
Describing the incident, Modu mentioned, “The terrorists initially appeared on the road with wheelbarrows, pretending to be in search of food items.
“This ruse allowed them to ambush unsuspecting travellers. Some drivers managed to return to Maiduguri to alert the authorities before military reinforcements arrived.
“We were travelling from Maiduguri to Kano when our driver heard gunshots and immediately turned back to Maiduguri. We have been waiting for the military to clear the road before continuing our journey.
The passengers were stranded for over six hours before the military could secure the road, allowing them to proceed safely.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region, highlighting the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram to civilians and travellers alike.
