A group of Boko Haram militants have executed an attack on the security personnel accompanying Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni in a distressing turn of events.
The perpetrators opened fire on the security operatives as they were en route from Maiduguri in Borno State to Damaturu, while returning the governor’s official vehicles.
Fortunately, Governor Buni was safely situated in Maiduguri on Saturday, attending the 24th combined Convocation Ceremony of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) alongside other prominent figures.

According to intelligence sources, the terrorists targeted the security vehicles within the governor’s convoy along the Jakana-Mainok highway. The convoy, which consisted of troops leading the way with an MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle, a gun truck, and another transport carrying police and Department of State Services (DSS) personnel, fell prey to the militants’ gunfire.
Responding promptly to the assault, the troops retaliated with a barrage of heavy fire, compelling the terrorists to retreat. Regrettably, two soldiers, including a driver, and four policemen sustained injuries in the exchange. The exact number of casualties among the terrorists remains unconfirmed.
“Fortunately, all the security operatives returned safely to Yobe, while the wounded personnel were expeditiously transported to the hospital for immediate medical attention,” the sources revealed.
