The Borno State Government, Police and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) have commenced the clamp down and arrests of suspected political thugs known as ECOMOG.
According to Governor Babagana Zulum, members of ECOMOG constitute public nuisance at political gatherings, funerals and naming ceremonies in the state.
While summoning the ECOMOG members on Monday at the Government House, Maiduguri; he warned that anyone found parading as a “political thug” would have him or herself to blame.

The Police commissioner, Abdul Umar, Director of DSS, Munir Mamman and other Security Chiefs, as well as elective political office holders also supported Zulum to commence the clamp down on political thugs.
“They cause a lot of public nuisance, including threats to people’s lives and property in communities,” said Umar, while addressing members of ECOMOG.
The Security Chiefs also yesterday alleged that there had been increasing cases of handset snatchings in tricycles and buses, theft and house burglaries in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Council.
Zulum announced that with the clamp down on thugs, it could deny access to government gratification as practiced in previous administrations.

Since the commencement of democracy in 1999, politicians in the state had been sponsoring political thugs to protect their interests; until Zulum came to power in May, 2019.
During his gubernatorial inaugural speech at the Ramat Square, he said: “This new administration would not condone the activities of political thugs,” stating that this include members of the defunct ECOMOG and other miscreants on streets of the metropolis.
