The Borno State Police Command, in collaboration with communities, has adopted effective information sharing in fighting gender-based violence (GBV) and other perpetrated crimes in the state.
According to the command, the agreement on the information sharing with police was to improve efforts of tackling crimes in communities and public institutions.
The information-sharing strategies on crimes were revealed at a town hall meeting on Thursday in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The police commissioner, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, said, “Our regular smooth communication with the various communities will boost collaboration in the effective and efficient policing against crimes in the state.”
According to him, the perpetrated crimes in the state included GBV, cybercrime, rape, cultism, kidnapping, vandalism, drug abuse, and armed robbery, mostly perpetrated by youths.
The over a dozen crimes, he noted, are not committed by the evil spirits. The police boss further disclosed that the perpetrators of crimes are ironically members of the various communities in the state.
He also stressed that “We need to improve our communications with members of communities in tackling the perpetration of crimes.”
He said the town hall meeting was organised as part of activities to mark the National Police Day (NPD) in Borno State.
Besides the NPF commiserations, he said, “Today’s event was to raise community awareness against crimes, vandalism, GBV, armed robbery, and the cybercrimes.”
Other activities lined up for the National Police Week included sanitation and cleanup exercises, road walks and combat physical fitness, a safety school programme, and a medical outreach to community members with various health issues, including diabetes, blindness, and various impaired sights.
The Police Community Relations Committee Chairperson (PCRC), Hajiya Kalthum Ja’afaru, stressed the regular engagement of the police and communities in crime prevention in protecting people’s lives and property.
She, therefore, commended the police for a remarkable reduction of crimes in the last three months of 2025.
