The Armed Forces of Nigeria has vowed it would leave no stone unturned to bringing perpetrators of the devastating series of suicide bombings that rocked Gworza Local Government Area in Borno State to justice.
The coordinated attacks carried out by female bombers, on Saturday, June 29, 2024, which left 20 dead and 52 injured, targeted a wedding reception and troops enforcing a curfew.
The military through the Director Defence Media Operations Major General Edward Buba has condemned the attacks as a desperate attempt by terrorists to create fear and distraction from their declining influence.
The first bombing occurred at 1500hrs when a female suicide bomber disguised as a beggar detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a wedding reception on Mararaba Hausari Street. A second bombing occurred at 1700hrs, followed by a third explosion that targeted troops enforcing a curfew. A fourth bombing was averted when the suspect detonated the bomb prematurely, resulting in her own death.
The military has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and commiserates with those injured in the attacks. “We will do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure a secure future for all,” said General Buba.
The attacks are seen as a response to recent successes in ongoing military operations, which have decapitated the leadership of the terrorists, depleted their resources, and reduced their support base and influence. The military urges citizens to stand united, remain vigilant, and continue to support their efforts to ensure a secure and peaceful future.
