Borno unveils six-year climate action plan for implementation
The Borno state government has unveiled a climate action plan for the 2024–2030 medium-term sector strategy (MTSS) across the state.
The implementation of the six-year action plan was to transform a climate resilient, carbon-efficient society.
Unveiling the implementation of the plan during the mainstream workshop in Maiduguri, the Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Emet Koise, disclosed: “Our state will become a climate resilient society by contributing to the federal government’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
He noted that the execution of a climate action plan by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) could harness the socio-economic benefits of low carbon with resilient development in the various sectors of the economy.
Koise, represented by Ladi Aliyu Maina, the Director of Administration in the ministry, said that by 2030, the state will achieve climate resilience with the pursuit of low-carbon growth pathways.
According to her, the pathway strategies will support inclusive and sustainable development in the state.
On the MDAs’ implementation of plan, Ladi said: “The strategic pathways comprise building resilience so that communities and the economy adopt to current and projected climate change,” as well as making development choices that are low-carbon.
She noted that the development opportunities are pursued and in line with national and global efforts in mitigating climate change.
“The mitigation of climate change in the state will provide the correct balance between development and environmental sustainability,” she said.
The director, however, lamented the challenges of insecurity and the incessant felling of trees for firewood to the implementation of the unveiled climate action plan.
