Buni advocates for strengthened independent institutions to fight corruption in Nigeria

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has advocated for a strengthened and independent institution that can effectively fight corruption and other graft in the country.
According to him, the institutions’ independence could check the massive misappropriation and diversions of public funds meant for service delivery to the people.
Buni made the call on Tuesday, when the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Linus Chubbi, paid a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, Damaturu.
He said, “The establishment of the Bureau of Public Procurements (BPP) has checked over-invoicing in procurements, the award of contracts, and the diversion of state resources,” he said.
Additionally, he pointed out that BPP has been “strengthened and independent” from the state government by ensuring transparency, integrity, and accountability in governance at all levels.
Besides being accountable to the people, he stated, “The oversight function of the various committees of the House of Assembly has also added value to accountability and transparency in the completion of projects, including the delivery of services.
Buni explained that prudence in the management of state resources has ensured the completion of people-orientated projects across the state.
In his remarks, Gubbi said he is on a tour of the state following his deployment as the ICPC Commissioner in charge of Borno and Yobe states.
“We are also on a preventive and public enlightenment drive for us to collectively win the fight against corruption and other related grafts,” he said.
He, therefore, urged the Governor to establish an anti-corruption and transparency unit in the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), stating, “They will support ICPC in the fight against corruption in the country.”
