Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has inaugurated water and flood-control multi-million naira projects in five communities of the East Senatorial District.
According to him, the Buni/Gari dam and water treatment plant are to address the over two decades of water scarcity in affected communities.
Commissioning the completed dam and water treatment plant on Monday at Buni/Gari, the governor stated, “The new dam has the capacity of retaining 243 million litres of water, while the treatment plant pumps 300,000 litres of water daily.
Buni said that other facilities of the water project comprise a solar-powered pumping station and a standby generator. He continued, “The inaugurated water treatment plant pumps 20 million litres of water daily for distribution to the five communities in the senatorial district.
Besides the water project, he stated that the collapsed Katarko Bridge and washed-off roads and culverts have been fixed by the contractors for inauguration along with the water project.
“We were able to kill two birds with one stone in addressing the scarcity of potable water and the perennial floods in the state,” he noted, assuring that the government will continue to provide potable water to the teeming populations to improve their living conditions in the state.
He added that the completion of the water and flood control projects is in fulfilment of his electioneering campaign pledges to the people in 2019. Buni, therefore, urged the communities to take ownership of the inaugurated projects.
“You should protect them from being vandalised while you inculcate the culture of maintenance in sustaining the water-supply project in your communities.
