Edo Governor Freezes State Accounts, Reinstates Ministry of Works Name
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has ordered the immediate freezing of all state bank accounts, directing that no withdrawals be made until further notice.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, on Thursday in Benin, Okpebholo warned commercial banks and heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to comply or face strict penalties.
“All bank accounts held in commercial banks are hereby frozen. Compliance is mandatory to prevent any unauthorized withdrawals from government accounts,” the statement emphasized.
The governor indicated that this action would allow for financial reconciliations and necessary investigations before future directives are issued.
Additionally, Okpebholo ordered the reversion of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges back to its original name, the Ministry of Works. He cited the lack of completed bridge or road projects as grounds for the change.
“It’s ironic that, despite its title, the ministry has not constructed a single bridge—not even a pedestrian one,” Okpebholo remarked.
He directed that the new ministry name be immediately updated across all official documents and platforms.
