The Head of the European Union (EU) delegation, Amb. Gautier Mignot, has praised Governor Babagana Zulum for establishing a Vocational Enterprise Institute (VEIT) in Borno state.
The institute sited along the Maiduguri-Dikwa road, was inaugurated by Zulum in 2024 to provide various vocational skills to the returnee internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Mignot, represented by Karen Jensen on Wednesday, in Maiduguri stated that; “The institute has empowered women and girls with skills in the various sectors of economy.
“We’re delighted to see a lot of opportunities the institute, has provided to people of Borno state, particularly the ones that were affected in the over a decade insurgency.
Highlighting the importance of acquiring various skills, Jensen said: “I’m commending the wonderful achievements of the governor for establishing the Institute. It’s one example of many centres, which are built and equipped by the state government under his guidance and vision.
“Vocational training is clear. It is something that young people in the state need, and this is something we have also experienced in Europe, particularly in Germany.”
On the support to State government, he said: “We’ve been reviewing a portfolio of projects and humanitarian assistance, and above all, developing cooperation in many areas of interventions.
He, therefore, pledged that the state has been, and will remain a key priority area for the European cooperation in the future.
“I’m impressed over the turnout of women to participate in the various vocational training programmes at VEIT,” he said, noting that the facilities at the Institute, are traditionally male-dominated trades, like welding, carpentry and metal fabrication.
He encouraged the women and girls to fully engage in vocational education to reduce unemployment and poverty in their communities.
