Former Army Chief Advocates Excellence for National Progress
In a compelling address at the 5th Edition of the OurNigeria News Award 2023 in Abuja, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff and Ex-Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic called on Nigerians to prioritize excellence in their respective roles to bolster nation-building efforts.
Speaking at the event with the theme “Providing a Podium for the Unsung Hero,” Buratai underscored the significance of recognizing and celebrating excellence, citing its potential to inspire hard work, dedication, and mentorship in service delivery.
Commending OurNigeria News Magazine for spotlighting individuals who have contributed to the nation through hard work, loyalty, and patriotism, Buratai particularly lauded the recognition of Oba Hammeed Makama, the Olowu of Owu-Kuta Kingdom, as the Legendary Icon of the Year.

“Oba Makama is a true patriot, a legendary icon, and a traditional leader deserving of all the honour accorded to him. His contributions to his community, the southwest, and Nigeria as a whole are commendable,” remarked Buratai.
Highlighting the dedication of both serving and retired military officers, Buratai acknowledged their role on the warfront against insurgency and in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
Retired Maj.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu received special mention for his outstanding service in various capacities within the Nigerian Army and the armed forces.
“As a loyal Nigerian and a trained soldier, you must exhibit unwavering loyalty to constituted authority and leaders,” emphasized Buratai.
Buratai also took the opportunity to congratulate President Bola Tinubu for his leadership, commitment, and resilience in the face of challenges, urging all Nigerians not to lose hope and assuring them that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
In response, Oba Hameed Makama, expressing his belief that national development hinges on peace, dedicated his award to the cause of peace and unity in Nigeria.
The royal father, a consistent supporter of security operatives and the military, advocated for increased funding for security agencies to bolster their capacity to safeguard the nation. He also called for unity across all segments of society to foster progress in Nigeria.
