Ghana President Reshuffles Cabinet, Appoints New Finance Minister Amid Economic Crisis
By Lawrence Audu
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced a significant cabinet reshuffle, which includes the replacement of finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who has faced criticism for his handling of the country’s severe economic crisis. The president has appointed lawmaker Mohammed Amin Adam to take over the position, signaling a shift in leadership as the nation grapples with its worst economic challenges in a generation.
Ofori-Atta, a former banker who had served as finance minister since 2017, was removed from his post as part of the reshuffle, which is seen by analysts as a strategic move ahead of the upcoming elections later in the year. The decision to replace Ofori-Atta comes in the wake of public protests and concerns over his management of the economy, with critics citing his perceived incompetence in addressing the country’s financial woes. Akufo-Addo’s decision to make this change is believed to be an effort to mitigate the impact of the economic turmoil on his party’s prospects in the upcoming general election.

In addition to the finance minister, twelve other ministers and ten deputy ministers were also relieved of their duties in the cabinet shake-up. The newly appointed officials will require parliamentary approval before assuming their roles in the government.
