Governance Over Politics: Advocacy Group Urges Tinubu, Lawmakers to Focus on National Challenges
The Association of Good Governance in Nigeria has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, and lawmakers to prioritise governance over political manoeuvring, stressing that their mandate should be dedicated to tackling the country’s pressing challenges.
In a press statement signed by its convener, Dr. Mohammed Sani Abubakar, and made available to journalists in Gombe on Tuesday, the association expressed concern over the increasing distractions caused by political disputes and power struggles.
According to the statement, Nigeria is grappling with serious issues, including high inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and economic instability. These challenges, the group emphasised, require focused leadership and innovative solutions rather than political scheming.
The association cited recent political developments as examples of misplaced priorities, including the Supreme Court’s verdict in Rivers State, the public altercation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the alarming kidnappings of Retired Brigadier Mahrazu Tsiga and Professor Abubakar El-Jumma from the Nigerian Army University, Biu.
“We are witnessing a disturbing trend where governance is being sidelined in favour of political positioning. This is not the time for party defections or intra-party struggles—Nigerians need results, not rhetoric,” the statement read.
The Association of Good Governance in Nigeria called on President Tinubu and other elected officials to remain committed to delivering accountable, efficient, and inclusive governance. They stressed that political activities should take a backseat until the appropriate time for electioneering.
“As we move forward, leaders must recognise that their success will be measured not by political victories but by the tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians,” Dr. Abubakar concluded.
With two years remaining in the current administration, the group’s message is clear: Nigeria needs leadership that prioritises solutions over self-interest.
