Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has condemned the destruction of the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat in Isiokpo, allegedly set ablaze by political thugs.
During his visit to assess the damage, Governor Fubara emphasized the need for responsible politics, stressing that violence has no place in the political process.
He expressed deep sadness over the destruction, saying, “Seeing this destruction is disheartening. Politics should be played with a sense of responsibility; we don’t need to destroy ourselves or government property.” Fubara also highlighted the irony of the situation, pointing out that the council secretariat, built by the immediate past chairman, was meant to be a legacy project but was instead reduced to ruins due to political violence.
The governor further noted that funds intended for other important projects would now be diverted to repair the damage. He urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice, clarifying that the attack was not instigated by his supporters.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of political unrest in Rivers State, with reports of violence and property destruction in various local government areas. The situation has sparked concerns about the need for peaceful and responsible politics in the region.
