IDEE Honours 10 Teachers, Celebrates Excellence in Education
The Initiative for Education and Development (IDEE) has recognised ten exceptional teachers with its prestigious 2024 Prizes for Teaching and Learning. The ceremony, held in Iwopin, Ogun State, highlighted the critical role educators play in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Of the honourees, three teachers were celebrated for their outstanding contributions to teaching excellence in the country. Chairperson of IDEE, Catherine Olaotan, unveiled the awards, emphasising the importance of participatory and skills-based approaches in education. She stated, “Encouraging teachers to adopt these methods will empower students to excel academically and prepare them for global challenges.”
This year’s event adopted a hybrid format, combining in-person and virtual training sessions to maximise participation from educators across Nigeria and beyond. Olaotan noted that IDEE has been active in Borno, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for over a decade, focusing on accessible and inclusive education.
In alignment with the National Teachers Education Policy, IDEE integrates a Teachers Development Programme (TDP) to foster a continuous professional career path for educators.
Among the winners, Mr. Shofela Temitayo Miracle of Millennium Senior Secondary School, Egbeda, Lagos State, emerged as the 2024 IDEE Teachers Prize laureate. Additionally, three teachers from Ogun Waterside communities—Iwopin, Oni, and Ode-Omi—were honoured for overcoming rural challenges to prepare students for global competition in sciences and arts.
Kabiru Abass, Chief and Technical Monitor for WISE/WICE and a member of IDEE’s Board of Trustees, lauded the winners and encouraged wider participation in future editions of the prizes.
The Executive Secretary of Ogun Waterside Education Authority, Nurudern Onaniyi, praised IDEE’s efforts and called for enhanced Continuing Professional Career Path Development (CPCPD) initiatives for teachers nationwide.
This recognition reinforces IDEE’s commitment to advancing quality education and inspiring teachers to reach new heights in their profession.
