The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Edo State Migration Agency (ESMA) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has launched the first short course on migration in the country.
According to IOM, the pilot short course on migration will run from April 7-11, 2025, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The interim IOM Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Paola Pace, in a statement in Maiduguri, disclosed, “Migration is an integral part of Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, and it is crucial to ensure that citizens are aware of the safest and most structured pathways to migrate to any part of the world.”
Highlighting the pilot course on migration, she said that the six-day migration course was to provide Nigerian youths with insights into migration governance and risks of irregular migration while co-designing innovative approaches.
Besides the insights on migration, Pace further stated, “The training initiatives of IOM will not only build awareness among youths but also contribute to shaping a well-informed generation capable of influencing migration policies,” noting that the migration awareness will continue to advocate for safe migration practices across the globe.
The short course theme, “Safe and Regular Migration Pathways for Nigerians,” was to address critical migration-related thematic areas, including migration, the environment, and the climate change nexus comprising sustainable development and migration policy in Nigeria.
She assured that by completing the migration course, it will harness the migration potentials in Edo State and the entire country.
