Israel Marks First Anniversary of Deadly Oct. 7 Terror Attack
Israel is observing the first anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Islamist group Hamas, which claimed over 1,200 lives in southern Israel and saw 250 people taken hostage to Gaza.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog will lead the commemorative events on Monday, beginning with a ceremony at the Nova music festival site, which was a key location during the attack. The three-day memorial will include visits to various massacre sites across the country.
While the nation mourns, divisions have emerged regarding the memorial events. Families of the hostages will hold a separate remembrance rally in Tel Aviv, coinciding with the time of the initial assault.
The Israeli government will also broadcast a pre-recorded memorial service from southern Israel. Due to security concerns, particularly the threat of rocket attacks, only 1,000 people will be allowed to attend in person.
The services will be available for public viewing through online broadcasts and special television programs.
