By Abdullahi Tkur, Kebbi
Kebbi State authorities have confirmed that a deadly meningitis outbreak has claimed 56 lives, with the brunt of fatalities recorded in Gwandu (25), Jega (16), and Aliero (14). This tragic development comes as health officials report 653 suspected cases spanning five local government areas: Aliero, Jega, Gwandu, Birnin Kebbi, and Bunza.
During a press briefing, Dr Nuhu Koko, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, detailed that samples collected from patients have led to the confirmation of meningitis cases.
“Out of 17 specimens sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja, five tested positive: three from Aliero and one each from Gwandu and Jega, while another five returned negative. The remaining seven samples are still awaiting results.
“Notably, all patients who tested positive received prompt treatment and have since been discharged in stable condition.
In response to the outbreak, Kebbi State has received 3,000 doses of CSM vaccines from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
“These vaccines have been strategically distributed across the most affected local government areas. Additionally, isolation centres have been established in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare, ensuring that affected communities are equipped with essential resources, including mattresses, drugs, and other necessary medical supplies.
The state government continues to mobilise resources and coordinate with federal agencies to manage the crisis. With an ongoing investigation and treatment drive, health authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms consistent with meningitis.
As Kebbi State battles this public health emergency, both local and national efforts remain focused on containing the outbreak and preventing further loss of life.
