Keyamo rallies African leaders to establish single aviation industry
By Lawrence Audu
In a move aimed at revolutionizing the aviation industry in Africa, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Transport, Festus Keyamo, has embarked on a mission to rally African leaders for the establishment of a Single Africa Air Transport Market (SAATM). This ambitious initiative seeks to enhance connectivity, boost intra-African trade, and promote economic growth across the continent.
Keyamo recently convened a high-level meeting in Lagos, Nigeria, bringing together key stakeholders from various African countries, including government officials, aviation experts, and industry leaders. The meeting served as a platform to discuss the potential benefits, challenges, and strategies for implementing the SAATM.

During the gathering, Minister Keyamo emphasized the importance of a united and integrated air transport market in Africa. He underscored the need to remove barriers and restrictions that currently hinder the growth of the aviation sector, such as high taxes, excessive bureaucracy, and limited access to airports. Keyamo highlighted that by addressing these issues, African countries could unlock the enormous potential of air transport and foster economic development.
The SAATM holds significant promise for the continent. By creating a single market for air transport, it aims to eliminate existing restrictions on routes, frequencies, and fares, enabling airlines to operate freely across borders. This would result in increased competition, improved connectivity, and expanded travel options for African citizens and businesses.
Furthermore, the establishment of the SAATM would facilitate enhanced intra-African trade. With improved air connectivity, it would become easier for African entrepreneurs and businesses to transport goods and services within the continent. This would not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the reduction of trade barriers and the promotion of regional integration.
While the SAATM presents numerous opportunities, it also faces challenges that need to be addressed. One of the main hurdles is the harmonization of regulatory frameworks across African countries. Currently, each country has its own set of regulations governing the aviation sector, leading to inconsistencies and inefficiencies. Keyamo stressed the importance of harmonizing these regulations to ensure a seamless and standardized air transport market.
Additionally, infrastructure development is crucial for the success of the SAATM. Many African countries face limitations in terms of airport capacity, runway quality, and air traffic management systems. Addressing these infrastructure gaps will require significant investments and collaboration among African nations.
Minister Keyamo urged African leaders to commit to the implementation of the SAATM and prioritize the necessary reforms. He emphasized that by working together and adopting a holistic approach, African countries can unlock the full potential of their aviation industries and contribute to the continent’s economic transformation.
The meeting concluded with a consensus among the participants to establish a working group responsible for developing a roadmap for the implementation of the SAATM. This group will collaborate with regional and international organizations, such as the African Union and the International Civil Aviation Organization, to ensure a coordinated and effective strategy.
Minister Festus Keyamo’s efforts to rally African leaders for the establishment of the Single Africa Air Transport Market mark a significant milestone in the continent’s aviation sector. The SAATM holds immense potential to promote economic growth, enhance connectivity, and facilitate regional integration. Through collaboration, investment in infrastructure, and regulatory harmonization, African countries can unlock the benefits of a unified air transport market, ushering in a new era of prosperity and development for the continent.
