MCRP hands over water supply facilities to Yobe agency
By Tada Jutan, Maiduguri
The Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) has handed over water treatment and distribution facilities to the Yobe State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA).
The handing over of the water facility was to boost the supply of potable water to Damaturu and the adjoining communities in the state capital.
According to MCRP, the handed-over water supply facilities comprise solar-powered panels and pumps, riser pipes, sets of water hand pumps, VLOM tools, and other tools for repairs.
Presenting the water supply facility over the weekend in Damaturu, the state’s MCRP Project Coordinator, Idi Musa Jidawa, stated, “Today’s handover of the Damaturu water facility to RUWASA is part of the solutions in addressing the problems of water contamination in communities, including Maisandari and Sabon Pegi.
Highlighting the significance of the water facility, Jidawa said, “MCRP has provided various facilities in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector by rehabilitating and upgrading existing motorised infrastructure, including boreholes, hand pumps, and VIP latrines across the state.
He lamented the disrepair of water facilities for over two decades, which overstretched the limited water facilities by the massive influx of persons displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Other handed-over water facilities included hybrid boreholes for healthcare centres, schools, abattoirs, and other strategic markets in Damaturu and its environs.
According to him, rural communities that are not hooked up to the national grid are provided with water hand pumps.
He therefore, urged the stakeholders in the public and private sectors of the economy to own the handed-over water facilities by adopting the culture of maintenance with protection against vandals.
The coordinator thanked Governor Mai Mala Buni for supporting MCRP to complete the various water projects in the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Garba Hassan Nguru, commended Jidawa for providing the platform to partner in overcoming the challenges of water supply and distribution in the state.
He assured that the multi-million naira water facility would be utilised in sustaining the supply and distribution of potable water to households, schools, markets, hospitals, and other health facilities.
