Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Adamawa chapter, on Wednesday appealed to the Adamawa government to improve the welfare of members to meet the national standard.
Usman Babbada, Chapter Chairman, made the plea at the 7th Quadrennial state conference in Yola.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference has as its theme “Nigeria health system in the era of economic downturn: issues, challenges, and way forward.”.
The chairman highlighted several benefits that still need to be implemented for the union members:
“The Federal Government has not yet implemented the upward reviewed hazard allowances.”
“Gov. Ahmad Fintiri pledged to fully implement the consolidated health workers salary structure (CONHESS) when the leadership of MHWUN awarded him for good governance in January 2023; however, this remains pending.
Furthermore, he stated that the government agreed in 2018 to provide 20 percent furniture allowances to deserving health workers; nevertheless, it has not fulfilled this commitment.”
Babbada appreciated members for the confidence reposed in them to serve them for a second term, promising to redouble their efforts at ensuring the success of the union and the health sector.
Mr. Isa Shehu, Head of Service Adamawa, described the conference as a significant milestone for health care delivery.
He urged the delegates to take advantage of the conference to share knowledge and chart a course for the future.
In his address, Kabiru Minjibir, MHWUN‘s National President, urged the governor to look into the issues of unpaid approved packages for members to ensure peace and harmony in the health sector.
Emmanuel Fashe, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Adamawa chapter, emphasised the need for employment of more health workers in the state.
According to him, there are some health facilities where a nurse attends to two wards, making service delivery impossible.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had opted for a consensus, which allowed the current executives to enjoy a second tenure with Usman Babbada and Jane Dibal as Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
