Troops of the 21st Armoured Brigade, Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have burst and intercepted 2.5 tonnes of illicit drugs meant for Boko Haram terrorists in Borno.
The Public Relations Officer of the NDLEA Borno State Command, Chief Superintendent Narcotics Jolaoso Segun Moruf, confirmed this in a telephone interview with our reporter in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
The intercepted 163 bags of marijuana were destined for terrorists operating in Konduga local council in Sambisa Forest.
Zagazola Makama, a security and counterterrorism expert, stated that intelligence sources told him that, “Acting on intelligence, the joint team launched a swift and decisive operation to disrupt the supply of illicit substances to the terrorist groups.”
Makama said that the interception of illicit drugs was successfully carried out following a tip-off that resulted in the recovery of 163 bags of the substance in a warehouse in Konduga, 40 km east of Maiduguri.
According to him, the intercepted drugs comprise “Goom or Akusukura,” which represents a deadly psychoactive substance.
He warned that it poses a serious threat to public health and a challenge to the NDLEA on national drug policy.
On the use of illicit drugs, he said: “The intercepted substances, which are in various varieties, are used in both liquid and powdered form,” disclosing that people use them to raise their levels of psychological or nervous activity in the body.
“In a simple term, the illicit drugs get the terrorists high in perpetrating heinous insurgencies and other heinous crimes in the state and Lake Chad region.
Meanwhile the intercepted drugs have been handed over to the NDLEA team leader, while the Konduga warehouse has been cordoned off by the military.
The military operation also highlights the effectiveness of interagency collaboration and the commitment of the military and NDLEA to keeping Nigeria drug-free and safe.
