MMC wins NEDC peace cup competition in Borno

The Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) football team has won the internally displaced persons (IDPs) peace cup in Borno.
In clinching the IDP youths peace cup at the weekend, the MMC team defeated Kukawa 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

The two teams after the shootout played a draw in the first and second half of 40 minutes of play at the El-Kanemi Warriors, Maiduguri.
The teams were also each given N250, 000 and N200, 000 by Abdulkadir Rahis, representing MMC federal constituency at the National Assembly and Chairman of Kukawa local council.
While speaking at the closing ceremony of the sports competition and Game’s Master’s workshop for IDP youths, he said: “We’ll continue to promote sporting activities among displaced persons to ensure peace in the liberated communities of the state.
According to him, the football competition and masters’ workshop were organised to engage the youths in sporting events.
“Today’s Peace Cup Competition (PCC) is to discover talents at the grassroots level,” he said; pledging that the commission will replicate the competition across the six states in the Northeast.
He maintained that it will “foster peaceful coexistence” among the various communities affected by the 12-year Boko Haram insurgency.
Continued: “The sporting competition is to encourage our youths and engage them in meaningful activities,” as well as return to their respective communities and promote sporting activities.
“The commission had also organised training workshops for the coaches for the peace cup tournaments among the 27 councils.
Governor Babagana Zulum; represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Isa Hussaini Marte, was excited over the football peace cup competition among IDP youths.
He therefore assured the Commission of sustained partnership in sports development in the state.

Marte congratulated all the teams for their active participation, stressing that there was no loser in the Borno peace cup competition.
Ten clubs from each of the 10 Local Government Areas participated with the MMC team emerging the winner of the peace cup competition after defeating Kukawa football club 4-3 after a penalty shootout.
