MSF commissions an emergency obstetrical health facility in Borno
The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has inaugurated an emergency obstetrical health facility in Borno State.
The Doctors without Borders will provide technical and financial support for five years while running the hospital.
Inaugurating the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care referral hospital yesterday (Tuesday) in Maiduguri, the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani, disclosed: “The 92-bed new hospital will address maternal and neonatal mortalities in the state.”
He said that the donated health facility will also provide life-saving care to women facing obstetrical complications and neonates that require urgent medical attention.
Speaking on the health facility, MSF head of mission in Nigeria, Karsten Noko, said that the hospital will operate as a referral centre, exclusively admitting patients referred by other selected medical institutions.
“This equipped health facility will also provide specialised care for obstetrical complications and neonatal emergencies,” he said.
Noko added that the hospital was built by the medical charity MSF and operated under the auspices of the state government.
In addition to the health emergencies, he said the facility and doctors will ensure that individuals in critical condition receive prompt and proficient treatment for various diseases.
The MSF boss noted that the strategic partnership between the State Ministry of Health and Doctors without Borders on the health project underscores the shared commitment to increasing access to healthcare delivery services to save people’s lives.
He noted that the facility could provide care to over 7,000 women in need on a yearly basis.
The State Chief Medical Director, Prof. Abubakar Kullima, also said: “The inauguration of the hospital marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal and infant care services in the state.”
Continuing, he reiterated that the state government is committed to making this facility a centre of excellence in healthcare delivery to the people.
His words: “The invaluable support from MSF in the health project will be key to achieving universal health coverage across the state.”
