MURIC Opposes Tenure Extension for Police Chief
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned against extending the tenure of Inspector General of Police (I-G) Kayode Egbetokun, warning that it could weaken efficiency, breed internal divisions, and erode public trust in the police force.
In a statement on Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, expressed concern over the amendment to the Police Act, which now allows an I-G to serve beyond the retirement age of 60, depending on the terms of appointment.
While acknowledging recent police successes in tackling insecurity, including the rescue of kidnap victims and resolution of high-profile crimes, Akintola warned that tenure extension might undermine these gains.
“The move has sparked debate—some argue it ensures stability, while others view it as a violation of the Police Act,” he said.
He urged Egbetokun to step down before the controversy escalates, stating, “Real heroes leave the stage while the ovation is loudest.”
