The Air Component of Operation Delta Safe has in a decisive blow against economic sabotage, launched a series of devastating airstrikes, destroying 13 illegal oil refining sites and 7 boats in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo States between June 18-22, 2024.
The precision strikes, carried out with enhanced intelligence and air-to-ground coordination, targeted illegal refining sites, Cotonou boats, and even buses attempting to siphon crude oil products. The operation demonstrates the Nigerian Air Force’s improved agility and resilience in combating oil thieves and saboteurs.
According to a statement released by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the airstrikes were carried out in several locations, including Imo River, Wilcourt in Rivers State, and Tunu in Bayelsa State. The aircrew identified and destroyed multiple illegal refining sites, canoes filled with illegally refined products, and gun boats.
In a surprising turn of events, the aircrew also spotted five J5 buses, reconfigured into mini tankers, attempting to siphon illegally refined products from surface tanks near Imo River. The buses were promptly destroyed, with some taking cover under trees to avoid detection.
The NAF has vowed to sustain operations until the activities of these economic saboteurs are significantly reduced. The continued airstrikes against illegal oil refining sites and boats are a testament to the military’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and natural resources.
The destruction of these illegal refining sites and boats is a major blow to oil thieves and saboteurs, and it sends a strong message that the military will not tolerate such activities. The operation also highlights the importance of intelligence gathering and air-to-ground coordination in combating economic sabotage.
