NCoS Trains 100 Gombe Inmates in Vocational Skills for Reintegration
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has trained 100 inmates across six custodial facilities in Gombe State in various vocational skills to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Mr. Salihu Abdullahi, the Controller of Corrections in the state, made this known on Thursday in Bauchi during the graduation ceremony for the trained inmates.
He said the initiative aligns with the NCoS mandate of reforming inmates and equipping them with skills to become self-reliant after serving their sentences.
“The introduction of skills acquisition in custodial centers has turned them into places of hope, ensuring that inmates leave as better individuals,” Abdullahi said.
He commended the Chief Judge of Gombe, Justice Halima Mohammed, for supporting the empowerment initiative.
Justice Mohammed, represented by Justice Abdulsalam Mohammed of the Higher Court, emphasized the importance of vocational training in reducing recidivism.
“The best way to prevent former inmates from returning to crime is to empower them with skills that ensure financial independence,” she said.
She urged entrepreneurs and organizations in Gombe to support such programs to further discourage criminal relapse.
Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, the Secretary to the Gombe State Government, represented by Lt. Col. Abdullahi Bello (Rtd), Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, pledged government support for inmate rehabilitation efforts.
Mr. Musa Nelson, the Industry Manager of NCoS Gombe Command, highlighted the various trades taught to inmates, including carpentry, cosmetology, tailoring, electrical work, barbing, and cap making.
He noted that these skills would help inmates secure employment or start businesses upon release, fostering a positive transformation in their lives.
