NEDC flags-off 500 housing units in Tarawa
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has flagged off the construction of five hundred housing units in Taraba state.
The foundation laying ceremony took place at the adjacent DDI Estate along Wukari/Takum road on Tuesday 26th October 2021 in the state capital.

Speaking at the laying of the foundation, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Alhaji Muhammed Alkali said 150 of the housing units will be built in the State capital, while the balance of 350 will be spread among other cities in the state.
Alkali, informed that the action has become necessary following the activities of insurgents in the region, adding that the Commission has as well resolved to make available to the houses certain social-economic facilities that will make the occupants comfortable.
Facilities enumerated by him to be provided in the aforementioned housing units when eventually completed include reticulated water supply, lighting, and commercial spaces amongst others.
Alhaji Muhammed Alkali who was disturbed by the activities of insurgents noted that the situation led to the massive influx of people into the urban areas where most of them are taking shelter at “any available public spaces, homes, abandoned and uncompleted buildings and some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the States.
He said the houses, when completed would go a long way in heralding succor to the displaced persons at various IDPs camps.
The DG revealed that the Commission, was established to address developmental challenges in the region and to restore the means of livelihood of the people following the over 12 years of insurgency, Alkali said, the Commission will not go to bed pending when the ills confronting the region are addressed.
While being optimistic that the plights of the IDPs will soon be a thing of the past, the Commission as stated by him has as well swung into action and “came up with a plan for the distribution of Food items to address the rapidly deteriorating food insecurity situation in the region. ”
Our Correspondent reports that the food and non-food items were handed over to the state Governor, Darius Ishaku by the Commission at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo.
Alhaji Muhammed Alkali also observed that the issue of imminent food insecurity in the region had been a matter of discourse for a long time.
He, however, informed that the Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has agreed not to leave any stone in reaching out to the Have-Not spread across the region.
In a remark, Taraba State Governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku reiterated his administration’s determination to provide a conducive environment for the Commission to achieve its desired dreams in the state.

Also on their part, both the Senator representing Taraba Central, Yusuf Yusuf and Northern zone, Shu’aibu Lau, all vowed to tread extra legitimate paths in ensuring that projects mapped out for the state by the Commission, are completed as at when due.
According to the two lawmakers would be made possible by facilitating the provision of funding for the Commission.
The Chairman of the Governing Board of the North East Commission (NEDC), (Rtd) Major General Paul Tarfa was among dignitaries that graced the occasion.
