The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has procured a N1.42 billion heavy-duty excavators to dredged Alau Dam and other silted rivers in Borno state.
According to the Commission, the dam burst last September, destroying 150 lives and dozens of infrastructural facilities in Maiduguri metropolis; and the Jere Local Council.
NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali disclosed this on Sunday, while inspecting the delivered excavators, at the Borno Central stores, in Maiduguri, the state capital.
He stated that the dredging of lake Alau and other rivers, will prevent future floods that could destroy more lives and property, including the 5,000 hectres of farmlands in Jere and Konduga Local Government Areas.
He noted that there is a need for proactive measures, by procuring the multi-million naira dredging equipment, stating; “Everyone knew what happened with Alau Dam in September 2024.
“We’re in dire need of this kind of intervention to dredge the lake and rivers, which had not been done since the dam; was built in 1986 by the military.
Besides the excavators, he said that the N500 million, was also released to upgrade the central pharmaceutical store, to a world-class standard in the Northeast region of the country.
He, therefore, pledged to support the six states with quality healthcare delivery services to residents.
On the Pharmacy central store, Alkali said: “It has been completed, and it is one of its kind in the region,” adding that about N500 million has been expended on the pharmaceutical health project.
Other inspected projects by the MD, included the ongoing construction of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) clinic and three-bedroom bungalows projects in two separate locations.
He added that these projects, are also replicated in the five other Northeast states.
