NEDC Sends 200 Tonnes of Aid to Maiduguri’s Flood-Affected Residents
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has delivered 200 tonnes of food and relief materials to Maiduguri flood victims.
SEMA resettled 700,000 displaced residents, including women and children, in Bakassi, Dalori, and Teachers Village IDP camps.
Mohammed Alkali, Managing Director of the Commission, distributed relief materials at Dalori camp, addressing the immediate needs of flood victims.
“Today’s aid focusses on addressing the immediate needs of flood victims before their return to homes in the affected city.”
He highlighted short-term measures, including distributing 5,000 cartons of cooking oil and 15,000 blankets, mosquito nets, and mats each.
He noted the vulnerability of children in camps and mentioned that they distributed 5,000 sets of children’s wear. Additionally, they provided parents with 10,000 clothing materials and wrappers.
He outlined mid- and long-term measures to address flooding, announcing that they will rebuild the collapsed Alau Dam. They will start by desilting the dam and then construct two new structures.
Engineer Garba Iliya says the dam collapse was due to excess water breaking three dikes, leading to massive Maiduguri flooding.
Despite the dam gate not being washed away, routine maintenance and monitoring of water levels are still necessary.
