NHRC records 495 cases of GBV in Borno for 2022

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recorded 495 cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) this year in Borno state.
According to the Commission, it continues to solicit cooperation and support against GBV and eradicate it from society.
Unveiling the rising cases in 2022, on Thursday, at an advocacy visit in Maiduguri, State Coordinator of the Commission, Jumai Mshelia, said the commision ensures everyone enjoys their fundamental human right.

She said, “These rights are not degraded, and any human is made to feel less of themselves.
She noted that with the 200 cases reported by the State’s Ministry of Justice in 2021, SGBV cases rose by 147.5 per cent in 2022.
Jumai attributed the rise in cases to “awareness of the people and confidence” in the Commission protecting fundamental human rights.
Besides the rise in cases, she added that some persons in various communities are experiencing the violation of fundamental human rights.
“They are, however, gagged not to speak up against the violation of people’s rights,” she said, stating that society has accepted the violation of human rights as a usual way of life.
Besides, she added that the violation is equated to submissiveness, as encouraged in the two holy books.
