Nigerian Workers Decry Rising Transportation Costs as Fuel Prices Soar
Nigerian workers are voicing their frustration over escalating transportation costs, which they attribute to continuous fuel price hikes.
In interviews with newsmen on Friday, several workers expressed concern over the growing financial burden caused by higher fares, noting the impact on their daily expenses.
Mr. Anosike Godson, a dentist, highlighted the steep rise in his commute expenses, with costs jumping from N200 to N500 within a year. “The difference is staggering, and it has drastically affected my daily expenses,” Godson said.
He also lamented that salaries have remained unchanged despite the significant rise in transportation costs. “I haven’t had any salary increment, and it’s tough.”
Similarly, Mr. Ubokabasi Ekam, an engineer, called for government intervention in regulating fuel prices to lower transportation costs. “Transportation prices have tripled, making it unmanageable,” he said.
Mr. Ubong Udoekpo, a lawyer, revealed that over half of his salary now goes towards transportation. “Most workers are considering resigning due to unsustainable wages,” he noted.
Ms. Joy Light, a civil servant, stated that her transportation costs now consume her entire salary. “I’ve had to reduce my workdays because it’s impossible to survive when all earnings go to transportation.”
The workers stressed that rising fuel prices have caused a ripple effect, inflating the costs of essential goods and services across the economy.
