NNPP Becomes Minority party in Gombe Assembly as APC Lawmaker Joins
The stake of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Gombe state ahead 2023 elections is getting higher.
The party emerged as the minority party in the state House of Assembly, overtaking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Hon. Bashir Yakubu Barau, who represented the Kaltungo West constituency, left the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to join the party. This brought more people to the party.
He was received into the NNPP by the Gombe State Governorship candidate of the party, Khamisu Ahmad Mailantarki. Before his defection, the PDP and NNPP had three seats each in the Gombe State House of Assembly.
Now that he has left, the NNPP has only four seats and will be in the minority in the House.
The lawmaker said that he joined the NNPP because he thought it was best for the state. He also said that neither the APC nor the PDP had the right kind of leadership to bring the state together and help it grow.
Since Mailantarki became the NNPP’s candidate for governor, people who were unhappy with the APC and the PDP have been moving to the NNPP.
Some state lawmakers, two from the APC and one from the PDP, had previously left their parties and joined the NNPP. This gave the NNPP a stronger voice in the state house of assembly.
A former councillor and four former deputy chairmen from Billiri, Kwami, and Nafada recently left the PDP and joined the NNPP.
Four former vice chairmen from Billiri local government, one each from Kwami and Nafada local governments, and a councillor from Billiri local government’s Tall ward are among the defectors.
