NUJ Yobe Council sympathises with victims of Damaturu rainstorm
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe State Council, has commiserated with the families of the victims of a recent rainstorm in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
The message is contained in a statement signed by Rajab Mohammed, the council’s Chairman, on Thursday in Damaturu.
While he described the incident as a natural disaster from the almighty Allah, Mohammed prayed for the repose of the departed souls.
The chairman wished those who sustained various degrees of injuries a quick recovery.
He commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for the timely support to the victims through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Yesterday, the Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mohammed Goje Confirmed the incident, he said: “Yesterday’s rainstorm has destroyed houses in the Ibrahim, Abbari, Gujba road housing estates, including the House of Assembly quarters and dozens in Pompomari and Maisandari wards of Damaturu metropolis.”
According to Goje, most of the buildings in the housing estates and quarters collapsed, killing four people with 41 others hospitalised.
He noted that the agency responded to the rescue and search team to reduce the level of casualties of the devastating rainstorm.
Remember that on the 9th of May, five persons were confirmed dead and 41 others injured following a violent windstorm accompanied by a heavy downpour in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
Dr. Mohammed Goje, the Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) gave the confirmation in a post via his personal Facebook page.
He said the search and rescue team of SEMA on 9th May 2022 responded to distress calls by good Samaritans and supported the evacuation of victims to Yobe State Specialist Hospital.
“A total of 41 victims are from six different communities/locations: Waziri Ibrahim Extension 1; Abbari Extension 2; Nayi-Nawa 3; Pompomari 4; House of Assembly Quarters, Gujba Road 5, and Maisandari 6 were evacuated and unfortunately five died (2 boys, 1 adult woman, 2 girls).
“All victims are receiving medical treatment free and already 23 were discharged”, he posted.
His Excellency the Executive Governor of Yobe state Hon. Mai Mala Buni paid a sympathy visit to victims of the Damaturu Rainstorm at the State Specialists Hospital.
The Governor was also at the houses of those who died in the storm to condole with their families.
Governor Buni who had earlier directed free treatment to all victims gave cash donations to each of the victims on a sickbed.
He described the incident as unfortunate and prayed for their quick recovery.
He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and donated some money to their families.
Governor Buni inspected some public buildings destroyed by the storm, assuring that government would rehabilitate the affected schools and other public structures.
He urged the people to heed to weather focus issued by relevant agencies such as NIMET, saying the government would provide drainage in new layouts to check floods.
Governor Buni was accompanied by the Deputy Governor Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, the SSG Baba Malam Wali, Ag. HOS, Garba Bilal, COS Abdullahi Gashua, and other top government functionaries.
